I would definately go for A4 if it's manual shift, but if you are looking for auto-tranny car, then go for the IS. Also, AUDI has more room/space compared to IS including fold-down rear seat.

I have owned two Audi's (A4) and IMO you're not going to find a better all-wheel drive car. Audi has and continues to lead when it comes to AWD sedans. If you buy one certified, then you will also enjoy a much needed bumber to bumber warranty (they pay for service too). The CVTs suck, I wouldn't own one and if you are getting a four-banger you are going to want a manual trany. 2006 and up modles have the FSI injection which will give you added performance. The cars can be feature rich and I really enjoyed driving them. That said, I would find a dealer that you are happy with and maybe even check out Audiworld.com - check out their forum and get some answers. A competative test drive would be good too.

I love my IS (350) I think the lines are better than the A4, the car is more comfortable (although little less room in the back) and less problems with the dealership, but at the end of the day you have to be happy. Good Luck.

We also had two Audi's in the family, my sister used to have an A4 and I used to have an S4. Our Audi's were both reasonably reliable during the warranty period, but became money pits when coverage ended. The Audis are very enjoyable to drive, especially with a stick. If you are planning to keep the car until the wheels fall off, you'll definitely want Toyota reliability and pick the IS. But if you trade your car every few years, give the Audi a serious test drive. It's a great car too.

Oh, and be aware that what cancellino said about free Audi service only applies to cars through the '06 model year. They got rid of their free maintenance program for '07.
