Unless your car is parked outside, itsn't it an overkill to use Clay Bar this early on?

i wouldnt say it's overkill.. i think keeping the paint clean from contaminents is very important.. the driving conditions/environment can really take a toll on your paint, even if you park your car in the garage every night.. things like tar or overspray can build up pretty quick if you drive through a lot of construction.. i was amazed at the dirt that came off of my car when i did my first clay..my car was only about 7 months old.. i plan on claying as soon as i get a free weekend

Clay bar is amazing... I've done it twice already. Makes the paint so smooth...

Nothing wrong with claying. Most Autopians recommend claying a brand new car. Not only does it make the paint glass-like smooth it will also reflect better when it's in that condition.

If you haven't used a polisher before I would highly suggest a little practice on something other than your black IS, black is going to show EVERY mistake you make...and there will be few until you get the hang of things.

spray some of the lubricant on, using the clay bar apply slight pressure and go in a circular motion. On a new car tho its going to be hard to tell where you have been, on cars that need claying you can feel the clay bar have some friction or gritting when rubbing on the car surface, thats how you usally tell what spots you have been to. Dont worry thats just the clay bar pulling contaminants off, after a few passes it will start getting smoother (surface getting much cleaner). Every so often you remush the clay bar so you move the contaminants inside and get a fresh clean side of clay

DO NOT drop the clay bar anywhere if you drop it on the ground you might pick up some sand/dirt particles and this isnt good when you want to rub it on your cars surface, so be careful handling it

The Porter Cable 7424 is an orbital buffer and idiot proof. The worst thing you can do is drop it on your car. Go for it and enjoy.

You don't want to use a circular motion. On horizontal panels (hood, trunk roof,) use straight back and forth motions going lengthwise (front to back). On the vertical panels (doors, quarter panels, etc.,) use straight motions going straight up and down. It takes a little more effort to do this but it will produce better results especially if you're using a moderate to strong clay bar that will leave micro scratches on black.
