Default Do you use Emergency Brake while parked?

Since the majority of our cars are auto, does anyone even bother? When I used to drive a manual transmission, all the time. But now, I don't even bother. Uphill, downhill, flat road...its all the same to me. Is this a bad thing?

I use it every time I park. It's just a habit! I've never even owned a manual transmission. I just read that its better on your engine but who knows. It's a habit now.

I do. A mechanic friend of mine told me that this is torture of the car's transmission. Have you every felt the car slighty shake/swing when your place your gear into park from 'drive' and let go of the break? That wears out your transmission a lot faster than you want.
What I learned as the proper way to minimize damage to your gears is to break, place the car in park mode, press the park break pedal then let go of the break pedal.
Hope this helps.
Regards,

I always put my e-brake on as a matter of habit and because I've heard not doing so can put a lot of strain on the transmission's mechanism which holds the car.

But I have another question to ask: I just got my car and even when I put the e-brake on it still rolls/shakes a little when I take my foot of the brake, so as if I hadn't put the brake on at all. What's the deal?

Yes hes 100% right. Use your parking brake while in park. Brakes are less expensive than a new tranny.....

I have to use it cos I have a MT.

even you have auto, you should use it....just to prevent the car "run away" if the tranny has something wrong with it and not "locked-in" your car.......

So far I have only used the parking break on hills...but after reading this I think I might have to change my habbit and do it all the time.

After comming from a manual transmission I think all manufactures should put the parking break by the gear selector besides, I've hit my shins on it a few times.

I always use the parking break.. It's just a habit and probably better for the transmission as people have said. I like the parking break where it is now. It took a while to get used to but it's unintrusive. No parking break lever in the center console just adds to the streamlined look.

you might still feel the rolls/shakes is because you put your gear in park, let go of your brakes, den put on the ebrake. Try putting on your ebrake on first, then shift it to park, you might feel the difference.

I agree with damaging your transmission if you dont use your ebrake, but if you park on flat land, it doesnt really matter since it doesnt roll or anything, so i only use it when i park my car on a hill.
