yeah from the back, there really isn't a way unless you can read the badge. From the side, obviously the brakes is the answer. and yes the smart *** answer is that you could race them. If it beats you, then you know.
Odds are that most IS's are 250's just based on numbers produced so that is what I assume until it can be verified visually (brakes or tag). But another general rule of thumb is if a young-ish girl is driving it will almost always be a 250. That is just the way it is in my experience. There are three or four IS 250's in the building I live in and all are piloted by young professional women.
maybe I should clarify...when driving on the highway and coming up on another IS from behind
Without looking at the badge while moving, there is not other way to tell whether it's a 250 or 350.
I have tried time and time again and I can't tell. The worst part is that the 250 badge somtime look just like the 350. The number "2" and "3" on the 2IS are hard to distinguish even at a small distance. You have to actually up-close to really see whether it's 250 or 350.
But, it's not really an issue for me anyway because I have a 350

From behind? Badge. Even from side/s it's hard to tell if the caliper/s is/are big(350) especially if the car is moving fast. Speed? If I wanted to race I'll buy a car suited to race.
