Those are wrinkles in the clear...that means they did a crap job on whatever it was they repaired. You're definitely not just being picky...I would lose it if my brand new IS looked like that.

You know, the more I look at that, the more it looks like they just did a really bad job wetsanding. I'm betting a decent detailer could wetsand, buff with rotary, and make it look better than the rest of the paint on the car that's OEM.

I get pissed everytime I look at it. Went to dealer today and service manager was out seeing a doctor. They said they would call me when he got back so I could bring it by. Everyone saw it including the chick who handled the sale. I called them back after 5 hours of them not calling and of course no one that I spoke to earlier was available. I will not be so nice when I go back again.

So had the service director look at it today. Said he could not see anything. Told him I will pull it up on the laptop and you can see it easily. Let him know that probably more than 1000 members of clublexus did see it and feel that its not up to par. No answer when I asked him if this expected of cars from lexus. I told him no way this car should have been sold with that defect and they would have never have put this car on the show room due to the fact it would show up for sure. Any QA? I asked. We probably didnt notice it he said. Well he goes on to tell me that it seems important to me so what do I want him to do? I then ask him how long he has been with lexus. 30+ years he said. I then ask him if he has ever had this happen before. No he said. I tell him at this point that I will take it to a body shop for an opinion on wether or not this a clear coat wet sanding problem or what and what it would take to make it look right. He tells me that they should fix it and they want to make it right. He said they may have to take it down completly and repaint and that this tungsten pearl is hard to blend. I said but you will make it blend and it will be fixed right? They will do their best he said. Still going to private shop to have them look at it. Have an appointment for June 19 and loaner car waiting im told.
I am pretty nervous about them attempting a fix and it not being right.
I am also pissed that this *&^(ing car was sold to me with the defect.

son of a #$%#^!!!!!!

Sounds like they are at least trying to make it right though.

Unless you plan on keeping the car until it falls apart, I wouldn't go for a repaint - I'd try wet sanding and buffing it out. If you repaint, it may show up on Carfax/etc and it may appear as if the car was in an accident which will impact resale/trade in value. I'd repaint only as a last resort . . .

Agree, an I'm leaning toward that. This car is going in 3-4 years. If the dealer repaints it will show up on carfax?

Here is my email with lexus corp on this issue. I didnt bring the car in because i want to see what big lexus corp has to say. The service manager didnt make me feel to confident that it would ever be ok.

Just picked up my first Lexus 2 months ago. Love the car and it was everything I expected. This was until I noticed a major defect in the paint on the drivers door and fender.(pics in attachment shows only a portion of the defects that the camera and light could pick up)I dont understand how a dealer can sell a car that has such a defective paint. I have never bought a car that has had such a problem. I can understand that maybe the dealer did not notice this. I can not understand how it made it to the dealer it this condition. The dealer tells me they will try and fix it but no promise to how it will come out. Is this what I should expect from Lexus? I thought I bought a brand new car and certainly paid the amount called for such a car. To me the car will not be the same once it is painted. It is very hard to blend the tungsten pearl according to the sevice director I spoke with today. I almost do not want it repaired for fear that it may be worse. It is bad enough that I walk up to this car everyday and see the defect. It will be much more than I want deal with if the defect is more apparent with a new paint job that is botched. Please let me know what options I have, since this car should have not passed QA.

Email sent today:

Stephanie,

Sorry about the delay, was on vacation. Heres the info you needed and some more details I wanted to provide.

Vehicle Identification Number is ^*^^^)8, Lexus dealer is McDermott, and the milage when this was noticed and reported to dealer was approx 4000.

When I brought the car to the dealer the woman who sold the car to me noticed it right away and so did the people she showed it to in the service dept. The service manager was away at the time so they said come back later. Went back in a couple of days and the service manager could not see it and didnt really seem to care if he could see it or not. Went to his office and he said this seems important to me. I answered yes it is important and that this car should have not been sold to me in this condition. I also stated that the car would never be on the show room floor or the flaw would show up. I asked him if anything like this has ever happened in his 30+ year experience and he said no. It must have slipped through and the car was probably damaged during transport and was repaired badly before McDermott receieved it. He said since it was important to me that he would have it fixed. I asked what is involved. He tells me that it needs to be taken down all the way and repainted. And goes on to say that the paint is hard to match implying that this was never going to be perfect.
I understand this fully and I am very disappointed about this fact. I asked him if I should have a different body guy evaluated the car and he said that Lexus should fix it. He did not think it would buff out or was just a matter of wet sanding and re-app of clear coat, which I am unsure if he really knows because he would not make a good attempt to see the defect or look at the pictures that I provided you.
An appointment was made for the repair, which I cancelled since contacting corporate lexus.
At this point I want to know if this can be buffed out without repainting, or just possibly wet sanding and redo of clear coat. I am considering bringing the car to a body shop in the area for an opinion on this. I do not want a new car that has been repainted with a possible mismatch of the paint as the service manager eludes to. The paint is dull in the defective area compared to the rest of the car but not mismatched.

Please have your staff review all the information and pictures that I sent and consider what will be needed to make the car acceptable as a new car should be.

Thank you,

Jeffrey , M.D.

Sorry about the long, (big yawn) boring aspects of this.

If he can't see a problem in person, and only on your laptop, that isn't very useful. (1) pictures could be altered, (2) are they going to look at the laptop as they perform the repair?

Did you see the pics? Anyhoooo, it is so easy to spot when I point it out that the girls that work there can even see it. (shame on me and I love girls)

I told the service manager that since he wasnt really making an attempt to see the defect that I would pull it up right there on his desk. I didnt want him to get away with saying "ahhh I really cant see it" after everyone that works under him could see it as plain as day. He just said he will have the guys look at it when I bring it back in and fix it.

Not gonna happen, I dont want to risk making it more visible and making trips back and forth until they get it right. I will bring it to my body guy before I would ever go back to that place. Negative Carfax or not I have documented the defect to a tee with corporate and the dealship and I will be keeping this documentation to show the next buyer that this was not due to wreck while under my care. Probably will be a trade in on a 911 turbo by that time anyhow(I know wishful thinking).

I will be getting my ducks in a row as far as legal help, lemon laws, attorney general, better business bureau of N. Haven etc. Then I have friends that are with the media. I will make sure the world(or at least this part of the world) knows I am unhappy as a first time lexus buyer.

So far I am being nice, but if the solution to the problem is unacceptable to me, lets just say I have nothing better to do for the next 2-3 years if it takes that long.

I do all the work myself on my cars as far as brakes, oil etc. Hoping nothing major comes up but if it does it will go to Westport or Fairfield for service.
