Wrong. It is 'International Sedan' - it's quoted in the Lexus book by the Chief Engineer for the IS. I'll look it up tonite and post the page and paragraph #.
Remember, Wikipedia is a public web-encyclopedia, just about anyone could post info, and there are errors - I'll stick with the Lexus book.
Also, FYI:
LS = Luxury Sedan
ES = Executive Sedan

This is the same question that I asked the dealer. I often ask tough questions to the dealer when I'm buying a car to gauge their knowledge. This tells me if they know their product, or if they're just blowing smoke.
Only 1 dealer out of 4 in Houston got it right, and this happens to be the one that I bought the car from.
IS = Intelligent Sport. I knew the answer when I asked the dealer because this was quoted on the IS video on the Lexus website.

"In fact, the IS program was something of a band-aid approach to Lexus's 'BMW problem' in the US and Japan. The car was actually first introduced in 1999 as the non-luxury Altezza model in Japan, where it was voted Car of the Year. A 2.0 liter engine version called the IS200 appeared in europe months ahead of the July 2000 launch in the US, and the very name of the car was shorthand for International Sedan."
