Incredibly Sexy.

That's what I tell the ladies it stands for, anyways. No one better try to steal my material!

Wrong. It is 'International Sedan' - it's quoted in the Lexus book by the Chief Engineer for the IS. I'll look it up tonite and post the page and paragraph #.

Remember, Wikipedia is a public web-encyclopedia, just about anyone could post info, and there are errors - I'll stick with the Lexus book.

Also, FYI:
LS = Luxury Sedan
ES = Executive Sedan

If you check the Lexus website and watch the video for the IS you'll see that they say the IS stands for Intelligent Sport

I believe it all depends on what the definition of "IS" is....

Wrong. IS does indeed stand for Intelligent Sport. It was in every piece of Lexus marketing material and videos when the 2nd generation IS was introduced.

This is the same question that I asked the dealer. I often ask tough questions to the dealer when I'm buying a car to gauge their knowledge. This tells me if they know their product, or if they're just blowing smoke.

Only 1 dealer out of 4 in Houston got it right, and this happens to be the one that I bought the car from.

IS = Intelligent Sport. I knew the answer when I asked the dealer because this was quoted on the IS video on the Lexus website.

Sorry Javy, you are drinking the marketing Kool-aid. The OP asked what IS stands for, not what is the latest Lexus marketing hype words for the 2IS. Here's my source:

"In fact, the IS program was something of a band-aid approach to Lexus's 'BMW problem' in the US and Japan. The car was actually first introduced in 1999 as the non-luxury Altezza model in Japan, where it was voted Car of the Year. A 2.0 liter engine version called the IS200 appeared in europe months ahead of the July 2000 launch in the US, and the very name of the car was shorthand for International Sedan."

Chapter 7, Page 178, paragraph 2 - 'LEXUS The Relentless Pursuit' by Chester Dawson, copyright 2004, published by John Wiley & Sons.

If there are any more nay-sayers left, please provide your sources . . .
