I like the feel and look of the leather in my IS, but I don't like the fact that an animal was skined for my interior. I wish I could choose synthetic leather.
No haPpY cows at Lexus.
I What do you guys think?
synthetic leather? It wonr be SOFT as REAL ones and people will say LEXUS is copying BMWs.....
Synthetic leather from BMWs are HELLA HARD. seats are not comfy... (Well, their leather seats are still not as good as LEXUS')
To be fair, I think the fan boys think it is okay because BMW gives you a choice to either have real leather or leatherette. I'd choose leatherette over cloth any day. However, I'd choose real leather over leatherette. At least there is a choice.
Choice is good, obviously. But when people accept vinyl over leather because they supposedly can't tell the difference it makes a mockery of what luxury really is. It's not about whether you can tell the difference or not, it is whether the product is real or not. That's why a cheap Rolex knockoff, no matter how good it may be, is not a substitute for the real thing. Otherwise you are just fooling yourself and others.
Putting vinyl seats in an item that costs over $40k is nasty, imo. Maybe when BMW fans can't tell the difference between vinyl and leather it says something about the quality of their leather, which is usually hard and not too inviting.
I think the OP was trying to make the point that cows (or steers..who says they're all female) are killed solely so that Lexus can have seats, and that if the seats were cloth, no cows or steers would be killed. That's what's known as a false dicotemy. The truth is that the animals are killed for meat in many cases, and the hides are also used to make leather.
I don't think that cows are being marched into the Lexus plant with seats coming out the other end of the plant. :-D
Damn. There are a lot of cynical posters on this thread...
The IS actually has cloth seats available, but unfortunately, not in the U.S. market.
Cloth seats are standard in Canada with 2 leather options: Base and Premium. So is the perforated Premium leather from a premium perforated cow???
I'm getting hungry. Time to cook that Premium Alberta steak.

I don't know why people prefer Leatherette, but some people do. They say it wears better. The BMW cloth isn't bad, I saw a bunch of decent cloth in BMWs and Mercedes in Europe. If I had a M3, I would only get a stereo, a/c, and cloth seats if possible (see: track car).
