Default This is why old people shouldn't drive...

[RANT]

Around 3 PM yesterday, I was exiting LAX and about to make a left turn.

So I entered the left most lane of the two left turn lanes.

After I entered the lane, I was braking to slow down for the red light ahead.

And as I was rocking to my favorite tune by The Strokes...

THUD!

The noise was then followed by a sound that was like scratching a chalk board.

I have been side swiped.

In my head I was thinking "No...no...this can't be happening to my baby..."

This was the first collision accident I have had in my entire life.

I was nervous and angry, so I honked at the driver who hit me.

We then pulled over at a nearby street, and I was anxious to punch this guy.

The problem was, the guy who came out of the other car was a grandpa...

Out of respect, I couldn't snap his neck, so we just exchanged information.

Then I took some photos, and he took off.

I soon did the same...but I realized that I didn't get any witnesses.

I've never been through a situation like this before, so I forgot.

Now I'm left with over $3700 worth of damage, and no witnesses.

I'm so worried about what will happen next...hopefully AAA will take care of me.

I don't know what to do next...

Ugh...old people should be taken off the roads!

[/RANT]

WOW... all that damage and you never thought of to call the cops??? Any accident you get into you ALWAYS... ALWAYS call the cops. Police reports really help when its not your fault.

I dont know if calling the police is really neccessary in this situation since it doesnt look THAT severe. I dont know about the US, but here in canada, you only call the police if the damage is more than $2000.

But judging by the pictures, in this case it doesnt look that severe, and since you have the other party's info it should be fine.

Not to make too big a generalization, but old people tend to hassle with you less about accidents that are their fault. They generally know they are not as aware as they should have been. The people to really be cautious of are the ones who drive the bad cars and have no money to settle outside of insurance (which is what should be done to not get everybody's rate's jacked up). They have nothing to lose by claiming it was partly your fault...

So how is the layperson supposed to guesstimate the dollar value of the damage at the accident? The driver's license course in Canada must be awesome...

Here in Mexico, we also have the situation that if no damage to person and just car, police don't show up (although they will if it is blocking traffic and vehicle cannot be moved).

Insurance companies will send out people usually in motorcycles or subcompacts and they will deal with each other's insurance companies.

Most of the time, if just minor damage, drivers just move on...insurance company premiums will hit you harder here and it doesn't matter who is at fault.

Driver's Licenses here in Mexico City and Mexico State are about to implement a point system, but will likely just increase corruption. Nice thing is that my Mexico City license is permanent for life.

Joonsta, too bad you aren't closer to Mexico City as my uncle could fix that for A LOT less than what is estimated. He knows how to bang out and smooth sheet metal rather than just replace doors, panels.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is o.k.

As for the situation, it's best to contact your insurance company and let them do the work. Get your car fixed and forget about your worries; you're only guessing what's going to happen next at this time.

I hope you get the car fixed as quickly as possible. Good luck!

Thankfully...otherwise my damage estimate would have sky rocketed!

As cc16ue said, LA cops won't come unless there's an injury.

The body shop I got the estimate from said they would replace the door "shell."

No offense to your uncle's door banging skills, but I rather replace the doors.

If grandpa's insurance company agrees with the body shop's estimate, that is.

Would my insurance rate get jacked up even if I'm declared 100% innocent?

See thats why you'd want a police report, but i guess cops in CA got alot of better things to do, i watch 'the shield' so i understand

In hawaii, we always call the cops, its a matter of liability. Also the cops show up, i mean they cant hang at their gf's house ALL day, wife n kids might get mad

knock on wood...I haven't had this happen to me. However, you should always call the cops and get an accident report.

Here in Houston, cops are everywhere, so there is always one near you.
