Wow this is something i've never thought of. my commute is right under 2 miles. I don't leave for lunch (I would if I could). But, that doesn't mean my car sits at home for the 118-126 hrs a week I don't spend at work. I'm still breaking my car in and if you average the number of miles I've put on the car so far, I'll still end up with over 13k in a year.

I'm going through the same thing - I commute exactly 1 mile to work. Why don't I walk? 2 reasons: 1) I wear a suit and tie to work everyday, and I don't feel like reeking of sweat by the time I get to work (summer has been very hot so far in Pasadena, CA), and 2) It's a 5 minute drive versus a half-hour walk. This type of use (frequent short trips of less than 5 miles) qualifies as 'extreme use' for an engine, but if you take care of it, you'll be fine. You can change your oil more frequently if you like, but I just posted a Blackstone used oil analysis where I went 10,000 miles before changing my oil and everything came back great. In fact, they told me to stay at a 10,000 mile OCI. Don't worry, your engine will be fine. I agree with al503 though - spend the money on a Blackstone UOA to make sure...
