Hello all,
My car is 3 months old and sometimes have an issue w/the shifter on Park. This happens more-so when I'm parked on an incline (even a slight one). I set the parking brake, shift it to park, then let go of the brake. There's always a little "play" in that the car will still move slightly forward or backward. Just when the car stops moving, the gear lever will slightly move a bit and make a notchy noise (that's the best way I can describe it). I just want to clarify, it does not shift out of park, but it looks like it may. I've owned stick shifts my entire life so I don't know if this is normal in automatic trannies? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What you are doing is putting a lot of stress on the parking pawl in the transmission. As others have said, it's a good idea to use the parking brake, especially on a steep incline.

As I stated in my original thread, I ALWAYS set the parking brake first before I shift it to park. I swear I push that parking brake pedal all the way down, but there's always a slight play when I'm parked on any kind of incline. Should I have my parking brake checked--maybe it's not grabbing hard enough?

I always use the parking brake and i suggest you use it, otherwise it ****s up your tranny, (mounts), differential, engine. The only time i don't use it is when i'm valeting the car, once i engage it and the moron started driving without the releasing the foot brake(handbrake) I yelled at him and he told me he didn't know where it was(stupid.) Anyways that is the only time i don't use handbrake. The bmw 750 has a feature that when it detects incline it automatically applys parking brake (very neat.)

You can put it in park before applying the parking brake as long as you apply the parking brake BEFORE releasing the brake pedal.
As in: Shift to Park -> Apply parking brake while holding brake pedal -> Release brake pedal, and get out of car
... At least I think so.

You are stressing the tranny. Most people already said it, but to clarify:
1. come to a full stop with "foot brake" on and still pressed.
2. shift to N and the foot brake still pressed.
3. engage the parking brake with the foot brake still pressed.
4. let go of the "foot brake" and the car will roll a bit and stop by the parking brake. If not, repeat step 1 to 4 and apply more force to the parking brake.
5. step on the foot brake and shift to P.
In short, the key idea is to let the parking brake do all the work of holding the car in one place, instead of the tranny.
