That's been my experience too. You don't stand a chance of convincing a cop that you didn't commit the infraction you're accused of. Better to be friendly and extremely respectful, try to establish a positive vibe, and then ask that he cut you a break. Don't admit to the violation (in case you later decide you want to fight it in court), don't deny the violation (that will pretty much ensure you get the ticket), just try to make your traffic stop the most pleasant one of his day, then ask for a warning instead of a ticket.
