Mine didn't work very well at all, it would cut out whenever you changed direction. I tried on top of, left, right,in front of, the third brake light. I wound up putting on the trunk, front edge in the center. It works well and it looks a lot better than the side.

i have done this on other cars and it works just fine. so long it has a clear view where you place it. many custom stereo shops actually install it inside the car for a more clean and custom look.
you can always place it inside and not mount it to make sure it pulls signal. my guess is you will be just fine.

I have a stand-alone XM Roady2 unit I use in the car, and I bought an extra XM antenna that was actually intended for the home kit, and I just run it to the rear windshield shelf right behind the brake light, works just fine. I also have 35% tint on all windows (non-metallic).

Best spot is next to, behind or if you have the micro antenna on top of the brake light.
The sharp angle of our rear window gives an antenna placed there a almost totally clear 360 degree view. I had my Xpress kit antenna placed there and my reception level was great. The only time I'd ever lose signal would be in situations you'd normally lose signal, ie under bridges, heavy tree cover and that strange signal loss close to downtown Orlando.
