Naked Road Trip

Well, even though you've already ordered something I'll throw in some comments. I think everyone is too paranoid about getting a nick here and there. It's a car for goodness sake. It will wear out, break down and basically dry up and blow away right before our eyes anyway, so why get so **** about it?
Sure an old fashioned strap on type will help protect you, but damn, they are ugly, and oh so 80's. Part of the joy of owning a sharp looking automobile is being seen in it as it was meant to be seen, not covered up with vinyl. I'd hate to come out and get in my drive in the morning, or after lunch, and see a strap on bra on it. How many chips or nicks you may get depends on the traffic pattern. Most damage occurs on interstates where traffic flings up pieces of crud. If you are out on the highways and byways with long distance between cars you won't pick up any damage. I've driven from Austin to DFW area, as well as Austin to Santa Fe, NM, a total RT mileage of about 2300 miles, plus inumerable trips in the Hill Country and I have about 4 little nicks which I've touched up. That is insignifant as far as I am concerned. Bras and coverings may make sense in a dense urban environment like LA, Houston or NY/NJ, but for people out in the wilds of the USA they aren't needed, imo.

I got my bra through Colgan too. Used it on a 3200 mile round trip to WI about a month ago. I put 2 coats of wax on before I put it on and didn't have any scratches (i have Blue Onyx Pearl) when I took it off 10 days later. The bra does fit really tight and doesn't move much, if at all once installed.
Over all I am really happy with it and plan on using it again during Lovebug season in FL.

hm.... dunno if anyone is still interested in going long distance still but blue tape works good.
Well That's what I did anyways. Worked like a charm. After looking at it. I wouldn't mind an is in that color. Of course I washed and waxed my car before I put the tape on.

How many rolls of tape did you use? How wide of a roll was it because last time I remember when I painted there were 3 different widths.

Nah... first it took me 30 mins to do all that. On the way back from LA I got my whole family involved and so it took 10 mins? and so we took the rest of the other 20 mins drawing on the tape with a sharpie and cutting out letters for fun. Just make sure it's on there aerodynamically? 'cause the tape flaps around if you don't.

I got the widest painters tape there was. only like 30 bucks at home depot for like 6-7 rolls of tape. You won't use all of them. I did two cars and still have 3 rolls left? I did the two cars going and coming back. It beats getting a couple hundred dollar bra for your car I guess. Unless you're doing roadtrips like crazy. For me road trips are only once every 6 months? that's a MAYBE too.

To each their own, but I could never drive a car taped up like that. Never. People have been carping about the bright yellow spare wheel and how embarassing it is to be seen with that on the car. But that is nothing compared to having blue painter's tape all over the front end. Nope, no can do. And once you are out on the open road, and away from suburban traffic, rock chips are really not a concern.
