Someone please correct me if I'm wrong that we should only polish the car once a year, twice at most. Polish will remove a thin layers of paint hence the paint going to get thinner. I think those of us with the single stage paint (onyx black, I can't remember the other color) probably should be careful with polishing. I try to wax my car at least once a month to protect the paint thought.

^The concept is correct, but your black paint job is not a single-stage system. You have to go back to the early 90's to find a Lexus with a single stage paint job. All new Lexus vehicles come with a base-coat+clear-coat paint system, no matter what the color. And yes, polishing should only be done on an as-needed basis (i.e. to remove swirls, scratches, and other surface defects).

so the Onyx Black isn't single stage? OMG the paint on it is so thin, I already have a lot of rock chips on the hood. At the rate it's going, I have to paint the hood and front bumper in a year.

^Yeah, I've got a bunch of rock chips too... I guess that's what happens when we actually drive our cars.

Yea really! When I detail a car (wash>clay>mask>polish>wash>wax>finish) its an 8-9 hour job! I dedicate a whole Saturday to it!

Sorry Javier but I have to disagree. My 2004 LS430 is in the Lexus Black Onyx 080 Single Stage with no clear. I'm not sure how the IS's are but I'm more than positive I don't have clear, and oh yeah it's a pain to keep it looking brand new.

I'm don't know much about paint but I can tell for sure that my Black Onyx has no clear either. I can tell a clear coat when I see one, that much i know.

Precisely. A single stage paint job would leave your polishing pads (and anything else you rub against it) black. Guys, OEM single stage paint systems are extinct for a variety of reasons - not the least of which are the environmental concerns of single stage paint systems in producing and painting automobiles.
