Why model anyone? I just think it is sad to hear someone say they did / do something just because teenagers in Japan do it (i.e. "It's a JDM thing").
I'm not saying that everything "JDM" is bad. A good example of "JDM" things that I liked about my last car (Honda S2000) was that the side markers and turn signals were clear (instead of orange), which I think looked WAY better on most colors.
