You don't really increase the chance of bending your rims, you just change the WAY your rims might be bent. If your tire pressures are lower, then the lip of the rim has a higher risk of damage. If your tire pressures are higher, then the center dish has a higher risk of damage. I've damaged wheels both ways, but if I had to choose which type of damage I was going to get, it would be lip damage.

You may prevent less damage to the wheels by increasing air pressure but if you increase it above the recommended pressure you are also increasing the chance of damaging the tire itself (hitting potholes). You also will be reducing the footprint which is not good for bad weather. I run mine at 1 pound over.
