Very, very few people can pay cash for a car, esp a Lexus. A car is not an accessory for 99% of the people who need a vehicle to get to work. It's good that you can pay cash for it, but can't agree with your view that you shouldn't get a car unless you can pay cash for it. If that was the case there wouldn't be any auto industry.

I well technically I believe almost anyone with a white collar job can afford a civic or a accord in full;however, a lexus is more of an accessory. People don't "need" a lexus if its just for work...anything would do. Well maybe my view is biased, I am 18 and my parents just paid every cent for it. I grew up in a family of 6 sibblings and most people say we are spoiled, but its not like my parents arent making very good money.

I'm gonna have to agree with Evitzee here. If your theory applied to me, i'd be driving a Honda Civic since that's all my $17K I put towards my IS would get me.

It's very easy for an 18yo whose parents bought him a Lexus in cash to say everyone should pay cash for their autos. Get off your butt, move out, get a job and pay for your own stuff and then report back as to how easy it is to pay cash for a new car with no assistance from mommy and daddy. Whether it's a Honda Civic or a Toyota Matrix you most likely would be walking a few years before you'd be in even an entry level type vehicle. You're right, you are spoiled.

I think the flood gates to that debate are now open...

I can understand where you are coming from to a degree. My parents bought me an accord when I turned 16, however that was 7 years ago.

Now things are different! I've moved out, graduated college, gotten a job and no longer need support from my parents. I paid for my IS with MY money and I make the monthly payments with MY money that I earn from working for a living.

Take it from someone who's been in your shoes... I think it's time you wake up and learn how things work in the REAL WORLD.

Well, that is his exact point. As a society, we live beyond our means. Since you had 17k, in his mind, you should have bought a car for that amount, be it civic, corolla, matrix, scion whatever and save the monthly payments for a nicer car after you are done beating up on the "civic" after 5 year. A car becomes an accessory when you have enough money to buy a car that will suffice and perform its transportation duties just as well as Lexus but one who decides to buy the more expensive brand and decides to put oneself in debt.

P.S. I am not preaching here, just pointing out the facts, because I am in the same boat, I put down 25k for a lexus when I could have bought a different car and not have a loan. After having a near-death experience, my motto is "You live once so live like a king one day at a time"

Cashed out my CD i've rolled for many many many yrs and bought my car outright. Pay $90 bucks a month insurance for my is350 AND my 5.0

As for ppl having their parents buy them their car? I got my lic at 15 and at 16 my parents bought me a brand new 83 celica GT hatch for 8k That was the first and last time my parents ever bought me a car, course i went on to total it within 2yrs.

SO based on your little above advice, technically you shouldnt be driving since you personally cant afforda a car at all on your own. Sorry thanks for playing but try again once you can base your advice off experience and not your parents generosity.

Well I am 18 years old... my parents don't want me working until I graduate UC Berkeley... They just want to make sure I will focus on my studies unless its an internship for some engineering/business firm so I can get some useful technical skills.

I am old school (and just old ) but I always have bought and drove what I could pay for at that time. My first car was a 1953 Ford that cost me $250 in 1963. If I only have the money for a Ford Escort then I drive a Ford Escort. Luckily I have had a good life and can now drive what I want. Like I said, not that I am smart, just old!!

Aloha,
Larry
