Its not recommended to place it in certain areas, due to efficiency. You can either plug it in the cigarette lighter or hardwire it and hide the wire period. Only thing with hardwiring it you will lose the mute button, but you will still have one on the unit.

Usually you put it in the center of the windshield but make sure it has a good view of the rear as well. Ive seen it put lower down by the dash most of the times but I dont think it works well there, I could be wrong. Ive also seen it put next to the rear view.

Found this on the Valentine 1 web site:

Mounting high on the windshield reduces the effect of sunlight reflected from the hood, which increases the detector's ability to find weak beam fragments. Daytime warning sensitivity is completely dominated by how one manages the sunlight issues.

Mounting high behind the tint band may reduce the laser signal somewhat, but it reduces the sunlight contamination by the same amount. The result is an unchanged laser-to-sunlight ratio from the scene beyond your vehicle, but with reduced hood reflections owing to a higher vantage point—a net gain. Only in the dead of night would a just-below-the-tint-band mounting position be beneficial.

The downside of high mounting is the move away from the most common aiming points. This means that in bright sunlight, you may miss the occasional direct hit from very close range—no detection at all! But that's possible with a low mounting as well, just not as often.

Hey guys. I have had both and I am telling you that my escort 8500 x50 is better then my v1 was. Better in the sense that it doesn't false alert as much. I liked both, so don't get me wrong. I think one more thing I like about my escort is that its blue. Just kind of looks cooler.

If you have more then 200.00 (which is the price on craigslist for either radar) You can go big baller with the escort 9500. It has gps to make where a false positive is and remembers that location the next time you drive by it. If the signal is the same frequency it wont go off, however if a cop all the sudden decided he was going to radar close to where you always false positive, it will detect that change and then alert.

Yes also you want to mount around the middle of your windshield. Especially for laser.

Radars are well worth the money. My escort has already saved my azz 3x's. Well worth the 175.00 i paid for it.
