Default Has anyone heard about a problem with cam gears on the IS250?

I have heard a rattling sound upon starting my car (06 IS250 RWD Auto) after it has been sitting for a few hours. Noticed it about 2 weeks ago. I asked the dealer to check it out when I dropped it off for the 20k service.

The service advisor called me and told me that there was a bulletin about faulty cam gears on the IS motor (not sure if it's both 250 and 350). Anyway, he said the mechanics checked my car out, heard the rattling noise, and confirmed it was the cam gear problem. They told me it would take about 2 weeks for the parts. So, I'm driving a loaner ES350 for the next couple of weeks.

Has anyone heard about this issue with the IS? It makes me paranoid about the reliability of my car after having this sort of work done. I was planning on keeping the car for at least 4-5 more years, long after the warranty is expired.

Have not heard about the cam gears, but the "lifters" that have to do with the VVTI is a problem area with the new IS, from the service adviser. It took my dealer a little more than a week to replace them.

The "drivability" issue was severe shaking of the vehicle when hitting the gas, all of the internal dash lights coming on and not going above 25 mph. It was found that one of the cylinders shut down.

Yes. there is a TSIB for the cam gear sprockets. It has been discussed here before. Toyota is changing their technology for VVTi going forward because the oil pressure operated cam gears are problematic. The V-8s all have an electric device to do this function instead of an oil controlled device.

BTW, your service advisor is blowing a lot of smoke. The valve lash adjuster problem has nothing to do with VVTi. While it is true there were 250s produced with lash adjuster issues, and both the 2GR and 4GR engines are having VVTi controller issues, they are not related in any way.
