Clips for plastic cover won't go back in
I had to take off the plastic shroud (cover) to access the adjustment **** for the headlights. I proceed to put the cover back on and the clips go back into the hole. Problem is, it's not tight, so they're pretty much useless. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or If I broke them when I took them off (I pushed them down and it just popped out).
Other than to make the engine bay look cleaner, does the cover serve any other purpose? Maybe I can just leave it off. Thanks for any help.

You can reset them. I learned by myself the other night. You have to slide the prongs back to reset the lock on them. Just play with them and youll figure them out. Then once they are reset just push them in and they will be tight.

You mean those 4 pieces sticking out? Can you elaborate more when you say slide it it back to place? I've been playing with it and they don't seem to lock back into place. Is this documented in the manual (I don't have it with me right now)?

When you remove the clip, you have to push the center pin in. When you want to put the clip back in, you have to pull the center pin out to its original position. What that does is spread the plastic legs of the tab out a bit locking them in place. It is a very common push pin tab design used by pretty much every car manufacturer.

The best way to explain it is to put a thumb on each of the 2 prongs sticking out and gently pull them apart as you are pushing it back into itself(towards the top of the pin).

Well the covers dont really serve any purpose other that looks and probably to discourage some owners from doing their own maintenance. Try looking at the attached .pdf, its the best I could find, not the exact clips but they are similar in concept so it might help some.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I looked at the manual when I got home last night and (surprise) it shows how to install the clips back. My GTI has screw-type clips so I had no experience with these push-types, at all.
