Smile Drag Strip 9_16_07 with the IS350 (video)

Not a personal record beating day, but was a good day to hang out at the track and get some practice in for the upcoming cooler weather. My fiance came along and was kind enough to take a few videos. Hope you enjoy.

06 IS350
JoeZ intake
Tanabe Exhaust
BFG Drag radials (these don't help btw)

Density Altitude was 231ft for the day and I had a 5-10mph head wind.

Maybe a 1/10th? I'm seriously considering getting the Borla Off-road version as it's good for at least another 1/10th and 1mph. It was later in the day and heating up when my buddy with his Borla equipped IS350 showed up and with almost identical 60' times he got about 1/10 quicker and 1mph than me. 13.6@102.x vs my 13.7@101.x Neither of us did very good when the temps rose, but the Borla is a sweet exhaust.

Oh and he even had his Hot Air Intake (Fujita) in his car. I bet he could have got an even faster time than me if he had his OEM intake system on, but he enjoys the sound of the intake. To each their own and at least the exhaust seems to be making up for it. haha

Oh here are the runs from today. Total of 6 for the day and very consistent till the end. (I'm going to blame those 60' times on an empty stomach.)

1. 13.441@103.41
2. 13.459@103.47
3. 13.548@103.40 (2.1 60' time)
4. 13.418@103.51 (See timeslip below)
5. 13.706@101.97 (Crappy 2.28 60' time) The tree started before I was even lined up. WTF!?
6. 13.830@101.90 (Another awful 60' time) Must be time to go home

Nice! All in a days work, right?

One question, what RPMs do you launch from?

I will be taking my car to the track(1/8 mile) as soon as my buddy gets his engine rebuilt on his Porsche. He talked me into it (for fun), although it will not be a contest against him (300ish hp on a less then 2000lbs car). He also runs the track with an old VW notchback running mid-high 13s on a quarter. I think its going to be fun...I hope.

good job Caymandive. In your opinion how does one obtain the best launch at MIR? I heard the announcer say you were from Herndon. That's were I was from before moving to Michigan, but I still go back to see the family at least once a year.

run #5) you get 7 seconds after you or the other person fully stages before the lights go. Even if the second guy is only pre-staged or not pre-staged. It happened about 6 NHRA televised races ago or I wouldn't know about the rule.

Thanks everyone. Seems like the biggest question is how to best launch the car and at what rpm. What works best for me is just mashing the gas pedal on the third yellow. Basically launching the car from idle and no brake torquing. I've tried to brake torque a few times only to be disappointed with even worse 60' times. Ideally I wish there was some kind of clutch mechanism where I could lay down more power off the starting line at say 4500 rpm instead of 550 rpm (idle), where I could see a benefit to using drag radials. I think I pretty much wasted my money buying the BFG's and probably won't be using them again as I can get just as good 60' times with the street tires.

Will definitely get some more vids, but probably wont' be until after the wedding. Our wedding date is coming up very fast (Oct 21) We're then going on our honeymoon to Belize the day after.

The next big event I plan to run and will be able to run up against cars in my own class will be November 4th at MIR for the World Cup Finals (Imports vs Domestics) I'll be in the SS class with NA 4cyl and 6cylinders. They will be having a "naughty nurse" contest too!
