So I was wondering if 225/40/18 in the front and 235/40/18 would do fine for winter season? I'm talking about winter tires..i know thinner is better during snow..but just wondering if 235 is too thin for the rear...

Sorry can't really answer your question but:
I have 255/40/18 on the rear. I heard narrower is better too but last winter I got great performance with these tires. Not sure it would make much difference to go with a narrower tire.
I have pirelli snowsport 240

why are you thinking about 235/40R18 in the rear? the proper size is 255/40R18.
If you are sticking with OEM 18" wheels, then go with 225/R40 fronts and 255/40 rears. If you want to be able to rotate your winter tires each season (meaning taking the tire off the wheel to rotate) just get 235/40R18 all-around. 235/40's works fine on either 8" or 8.5" wide wheels.

one of my friend can get me a really good deal on a set of winter tires..
but the biggest size is a 235/40/18. is it ok to run 235/40/18 on the is350? its not wise right? or should i go with 225/40/18 in front and 235/40/18 rear?

I would recommend going with a 17" rim/tire setup. A tire with a taller sidewall will be better in the snow. I have an IS350 w/ the 18" setup but switch to a 17" combination for winter driving. So far, I have had no problems in getting around. Sacrifice a bit of dry handling for better snow/ice traction.
