THANKS to all of you for the advice. I tried this during the daytime [I]with[I] my headlights on and it didnt exactly work. But I tried again during the dark and I smiled when the map switched to a black background.
I thought that **** was for the instrument cluster only, which is why i never touched it.

However, if you make it into a tunnel or parking structure and try it again, it will work...
There must be a sensor that controls this feature accordingly to the amount of light in the interior cabin..

^^ That is weird..
I just found this:
With the Headlight switch ON position 1 or 2 and the interior light dimmer NOT clicked over to the Max position...
...when you hit the Disp function you will get a button that allows you to select "Day Screen" or mode, ALL of the time... you either select it or de-select it
If you turn the dimmer **** to max while in this screen, the button will disappear.
It doesn't solve the issue with wanting the guage clusters set to Max Bright and having the screen on "night mode"... for night time driving.
I guess the Lexus engineers can't think of everything..

Yeah--this one kinda boggles my mind--it's the nav screen that gets blinding at night, more so than the guages. Personally, I wouldn't want the nav on day mode but the guages on nite; but I'd want the opposite.

Someone with access to TIS ought to look at a circuit diagram for that ****. Perhaps the "click" grounds two wires, one for max illumination and another to lock the nav in day mode? If so, implementing what you want could be an easy mod. Probably not, but it's worth taking a look...
