0 miles left is when I start to worry about it.

I average about 25-26 MPG and I'll drive another 30-40 miles after it hits 0. I always look to see how much gas goes in so I know how close I got to empty. Most of the time, it's usually just over 16 gallons. The closest I've gotten is 16.73 gallons without topping it off.

Anyways I got to 5 miles.
I've heard that in addition to powering your car, the fuel also acts as a cooling substance for the fuel pump. If indeed true, running too low a fuel supply could potentially cause premature failure of the fuel pump due to overheating.

If you look through the thread, you should see some replies that have gone to zero or even below that before they filled up with gas....

Got to zero on second fill. Gauge said had 1/4 tank left....
Computer must have learnt something coz cant do that now.
DTE at first fill from new was 375m, but it now starts counting down from 450m.

But I don't push my 250 too hard.

I've never had a car that allowed me to use more than about 95% of the total fuel capacity before I was walking.
Make it go down to ZERO and then FILL up...how many gallons it took to fill up minus 17 equal gallons for reserve. And to get fancy MULTIPLY Reserve gallons by avg MPG and you have you miles before the car turns off.

ANd thats how everyone else get there reserve on the cars.

That's NOT the correct way to figure out the reserve capacity. My point above was that the rated fuel capacity and useable fuel capacity are not necessarily equal. I've never had a car that allowed me to use the last 3/4 gallon of fuel that it was rated to hold. For example, my Honda S2000 would only hold 12.2 gallons after sputtering in to the station despite it having a 13.1 gallon rated fuel capacity.

I've been wanting to check the useable fuel capacity ever since I bought it, but never have gotten around to it. My plan was to carry a 1 gallon container of gas in the trunk, and drive around until it dies.

You guys are nuts. I always fill up when the needle hit around last two lines or 30 miles left. usually low gas light lit up when the needle is at last line.

The difficult thing about me doing it is that it does take planning. I would need to have a couple hours free time to do the test at the same time that I just happen to have a nearly empty tank. I really don't want to intentionally run out of gas at the wrong time (like on the way to / from work in rush hour).
