I think a exterminator once told me a small crack around 3/4" can easily be accessed by a rat. their head has no bones so its flexable. they just slide right in... damn rodents....

yea, I left my windows open the day before I found a mysterious trail of chewed up paper (which later turned out to be my registration and proof of insurance)

it smelled like mouse crap (and then like peanut butter, after i placed several sticky traps that didn't work).

i'm not actually sure how it got in though, because after a while, all my insulation in the engine bay was chewed up and it made a nice hole for itself to get into the inside of my car's glovebox. i figured that out one day when i chased it out of my car and saw it jump out... then opened my hood and screamed at it, as it jumped back into the hole. i am lucky, though, the rat was kind enough to only make a mess of my paper and insulation and cabin air filter and not any of the wires.

It was not a manufacturer defect but rather an outside force that effected, so no warrenty will cover it. You should as stated above, obtain the harness lume and replace yourself, it will be very easy. You may have to remove the backseat and door sill covers, but that is very easy.

Was it the only cable that was allegedly chewed through?

I take it they have checked the surrounding area?

If they've chewed through the insulation (rodents that is, not the dealers) on other cables then there could be a further risk there.

What is the cable path of that one?
