Default Backup Camera Dead - $3500 to fix!

So, a couple weeks ago my backup camera stopped working. I took it in for service and was told that the camera was defective and they would order a new one and replace it under warranty.

Today, I brought it in and was told this afternoon that the camera is fine, but the wiring harness was damaged, likely from rodents. The harness isn't covered so it'll cost $3,500! I can't believe how outrageous this is and insurance is still going to cost me my deductible.

Has anyone else had this problem before or know of anything else I can do?

Rodents...? Wow... Exactly how long did you let your car sit for rodents to crawl in there and chew your (of all things) back-up camera video cable apart? Also, how is it that thats all they chewed apart in the entire wire harness?

what a rip-off what you shuold do is buy the cable and do it yourself or pay a car electrician to do it, it should it be that hard, its just a cable

My car is parked outside at night, so I can only imagine it's squirrels or chipmunks, but I still can't believe it.

Thats ridiculous! That should be covered by warranty, its not like you altered it in any way or modified it. I would fight.

Before I would even call the insurance company I would WANT TO SEE the harness after the dealer takes it out and infact see if it has been chewed by rodents.

Dealers sometimes say the dumbest things to get money out of you.

Have them show you the harness??

I like that idea. I haven't seen the harness myself and they're putting my car back together tonight so I can pick it up in the morning.

It's possible. My friend had rats living in the engine bay. It chewed out the foam on under the hood and they collected leaves/nuts and stored it near the engine.

I smell a rat ! Highly unlikely that rodents chewed the harness. And if they did why didn't Lexus foresee this problem and protect the harness from this type of damage?? So now it is a design defect. Push back and challenge them all the way, and have them prove to YOU where the damage occurred. Sounds like they just don't want to do the warranty work for you, although they may well charge the work to Lexus Corp and pocket your $3,500. It's happened.

I've seen it, especially in colder climates, where a warm vehicle is just a nice little enclosed space to live in...

I suggest to look into that deeper, that sounds to shady. $3500.00 for a harness what a rip off.

Dont pay them untill you see the harness, if not tell them to put the old one back and you'll go see another mechanic. Your getting ripped.
