Default Is the 30k service a joke?

Why are dealerships are charging $500-$600+ for 30k service? I just looked in the owners manual and the only thing different from the 5k intervals it suggests is to replace the brake fluid (besides engine and ac filters which I just did recently).
What are people paying for with their 30k scheduled maintenance and WHY?

I think you have answered your own question.

I do my own oil, air filter, cabin filter..So I don't expect to have any mileage dealer work done for a long time

I declined it.

I have an aftermarket air intake filter, and I just did my own AC filter. We can't rotate our 2IS tires, and there really is no need for major fluid changes.

Paid $50 for an oil change and that was that...

Has anyone else done their 30k service for less than $500-600? I'm at 28.6k miles now and I haven't yet explored the cost at my dealership but they are usually pretty reasonably priced (as far as stealerships go, that is). They only charge $55 for an oil change which isn't that bad IMO. I'm just wondering what prices people have been quoted/paid.

I like to exchange all my fluids......1)replace brake fluid 2)replace PS fluid 3)drain and fill differential fluid 4)drain and refill coolant 5)flush and refill ATF and 6)drain and fill oil. Additionally change air filter, ac filter and oil filter and rotate tires. Replace wiper blade inserts. Cost is around $400 at a toyota dealership nearby

Maybe I misread this ...but you have to do #1-5 that you mentioned above at 30K service? Seems a bit extreme....

He's talking about his own preferences, not what is recommended in the Lexus service schedule. In fact one of the items he recommended, "change the PS fluid", doesn't even apply to the IS, which has electric power steering.

Haha that's funny. Maybe we should swap out the muffler bearings at 30k?

I’m about to do 30K miles on my Pilot and even my dealership told me the 30K service was BS. My service buy took their normal list of items and highlighted the things I should do... Came out to $150 vs like $400 for all of the "check this, check that’s"

That's surprising, given that they rely on people keeping up with their maintenance to keep them financially afloat. I'm glad your service writer is honest, but I wouldn't bet on him being there too long if he's offering customers that kind of "help".

What would be really surprising is if a dealership really built their business plan on 30k services to stay afloat.
