I wouldn't use RainX, it's the same idea of spraying non-stick cooking spray on your front bumper to keep bugs off. Do it right, with the right product, and you'll have no issues.
I was thinking of something along these lines...

Not sure about this brand, but its along the lines of what I'm looking for..

Wheel Wax works wonders on painted, chrome, and alloy wheels. I've been using it for years, as have a number of my friends.
