Niagara Falls is also like a 10-12 hour drive... NY is a -big- state... If you don't want LI then you've got the near-upstate mountains or go with Eastern Shore of Maryland... there's a little town called Chestertown for example that's very pretty, several "romantic" B&B type places, some nice shops, etc... plenty of other cute little towns over there too if the moutains (near upstate) isn't your thing

OK. Where I come from a long drive is 1-2 hours. And that's a looong drive around here.
Other than that I was just thinking that there are a bunch of B&B-type places like Kurtz just mentioned that are always showcased in the sitcoms.

Take a ride to the Poconos. There are some lovely falls around that area and some fun curvy roads to drive on. I haven't lived up in that area for awhile, so I don't know a good place to stay. Try to find a nice bed and breakfast.
Years ago, the only place to stay had the big champagne glass tubs. I just looked this up for you. Maybe it would help.
