Default change to synthetic now or not?

I had the car about 5 months and 3500 miles, I am going to do the oil change myself not sure to put in Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-20 now or just use castro GTX stuff (non synth) for another 3000-5000 miles

Also do you recommending spending $50 to get the toyota SST wrench or use the autozone, I heard it fits a bit loose.

I have the autozone one and it works perfectly fine. I would suggest to always use synthetic, its a world difference.

I would use synthetic, Its better for new cars. Although the dealership uses a blend, which is not fully synthetic.

can you guys explain or state the size of the tool needed ? I heard a socket wrench can work?

When it comes to synthetic vs. dino, the rule of thumb is to use either dino or dino/synthetic blend for the first 10k to 15k, then switch to full synthetic. Supposedly, this allows the internals of the engine to settle properly. Will using full synthetic from the first oil change damage or help? Probably not.

Above all, what is most important is to change the oil and filter regularly. Dino oil is supposed to be changed every 3k miles and synthetic every 5k miles.

I would wait until you have 10,000 miles before switching out to Synthetic thus allowing the motor to be broken in. In the end it's really your call......but that's what I would do and what I did do. Be careful when you switch about which oil you choose. Not all will meet Lexus specs and that includes many youi read about here. Oil is not just oil.........Example: Mobil 1 0/40 meets specs but Mobil 1 5/30 or 5/20 do not. Same with Castrol and others.
Good luck.

The first oil change for your new lexus should be free at any dealer. Inquire and schedule the free service. Also there is a tsib for dusty brake pads, inquire and have the dealer swap out new pads for free. Worry about the synthetic oil change after the freebee.

While it's true you can get by with just about any oil........Mercedes, BMW and Audi have gone much further in approving oil for their products. This is based on a couple of things. One. They products are driven faster than most over here in America and secondly, BMW and Mercedes and perhaps Audi have oil change intervals of up to 15,000 miles (compared to Lexus @ 5,000 miles). Longer change intervals call for different oils. Here is a list of approved oils from Mercedes. You can also check the bimmer forums for their list......it's pretty much the same as Mercedes and why I didn't post it here.

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

I actually use BMW Full Synthetic 5-30 in my Lexus (made by Castrol in Europe and sold as Castrol TXT SOFTEC PLUS 5W-30. It's approved by BMW for change interval up to 15,000 miles. If it's good enough for them to run that long it's surely good enough to run 7,500 miles in my Lexus (would run it 10,000 miles but Lexus only approves oil intervals out to 7,500 miles or six months)

In reviewing the list you'll notice for example that Castrol 5-30 Synthetic does not meet their longer change interval. The only Castrol sold in the states that does is Castrol 0-30 Synthetic and is made in Germany (it's on the can/bottle) I'm told it's sold at Auto Zone.

In the end you do as you please but I thought this information might be both interesting to read and useful.

Changing your oil at 15,000k+ intervals is crazy.

My dad is a bmw mechanic and owns his own business. He actually brought home a oil filter from a bmw 323 with oil change intervals done at 15-20k miles. He had to cut the filter in half to get it out of the canister. The entire filer was clogged with carbon and think gunk. My dad surprised the entire even ran. I should of taken pics of the filter but I threw it away after he showed me.

Can't say about BMW but I changed my oil (per Mercedes) at 10,000 miles and the oil didn't look bad and the filter was dirty (it's a filter and should be) but other wise no worse for wear. Remember BMW, Lexus, Mercedes all have larger oil pans. My 1992 Camry with 111 thousand miles only takes 3 and a half quarts with filter...........I've been changing it at 7,500 miles since new and it still goes between oil changes without having to add a drop. Your/my Lexus holds 6 and a half quarts with filter. Larger capacity spreads the work around and that's why you can run the oil longer. Oh yeah, my Mercedes four banger held almost 7 quarts of oil with filter.

Most fellows on the BMW site agree with your Dad and would not go that long. Remember who owns Jiffy Lube...............you forgot? It's Royal Dutch Shell now we both no how unbiased they would be.......right?

Amsoil sells oils with recommend changes at 25,000 or in one case 35,000 mile intervals, and more than plenty of well modded cars have been getting along fine with it for many years.

Hey guys, I don't really care about the extended oil change intervals.. I plan to change my oil around 4-5K at maximum, part of the reason is that I don't put alot of miles per month.

I just want to know if it's OK to put in Mobil 1 sythetic 5W-20 at 3500 miles, would the synthetic be too slippery for the rings, I would think the engine is fully broken in already at this mileage
