Siping tires
Has anyone ever had their tires siped?
I just went to get a quote on some winter tires for my car, and the guy was trying to talk me out of buying $1100 worth of tires, and instead he said to get the tires siped for about $40, and the tires would perform good enough in the winter.
Any thoughts?

If you have the OEM summer tires on your car, don't do it.
While this might help winter performance, it won't even come close to a decent set of winter tires. Also, siping tires decreases the strength of the tread blocks, degrades performance in warm/dry weather, and causes more tread squirm (movement in the tread).
What you're really talking about is taking an OEM summer tire and making it into a ghetto all-season. The result is the worst of both worlds - unintended use of a summer tire in the winter, and compromised performance when summer rolls around.
