I get about 13.5mpg when driving in Los Angeles. This is where I do most of my driving and the traffic is terrible. There is nothing wrong with your car getting such a low mpg. If your in constant stop and go traffic and it takes 20 minutes to cover just 5 miles than thats the mpg you expect. I thought that there might be something wrong with my car, but when I took a 100 mile road trip to san diego, I was getting 26 mpg. That was the highest I ever got. If I lived in any other city that had less traffic, then I'd probably be getting much better mpg.

There is no way using simple math your going to get the same numbers as the computer in your car. To many things change from each time you pump your gas. Temperature for one will affect the amount of actual gas that goes into the tank. The car's computer is calculating the actual gas being burnt regardless of the quantity in the tank. This should give much more accurate numbers. JHMO

AS for my MPG I've never averaged less than 21/22 for a tank. I recently drove 279 miles across the Mohave desert in under four hours. The MPH average said 73 and the tank average was just over 27 MPG. Can't expect better than that with a 204 HP six banger.

It normally takes me 30-40 minutes to cover about 6 miles, and that drive (back and forth to work) is the bulk of my driving. I also go on a freeway maybe once every month or so, so 99% of my driving is city.

You getting that gas mileage with an IS350 kinda makes me wish I had checked the box next to the extra 102 hp.

When I drive like a crazed maniac on steroids in the mountains, I've averaged as low as 10.8mpg over some runs, but that's only because the car is pretty much constantly on redline for extended periods of time. I don't know how anyone could possibly have a lifetime avg of 11-13...
you and i have the exact same car, we should hook up some time, where in colorado do you live?

I've documented the difference. It swings both ways, although rarely does it indicate less than what I've measured the old fashioned way.

There are a lot of variables beyond your control. Fuel density is the greatest. Your ECM measures grams of air and assumes grams of fuel with a feedback device to fine tune. You buy fuel by volume, not by mass, so there are plenty of opportunities for the numbers to be all jacked up. Gasoline should be sold by weight, not volume IMHO.

Yes that was my average after doing a short run (30 miles approx) after filling up. I don't normally drive like that so usually it's higher.

If that's 99% of the driving you do, I think you made the right engine choice. Heck, you could have 50hp an it wouldn't matter in those driving conditions.

I don't think that's true. If the engine was 50 hp, the you would be using a higher percentage of the engine's total power, which should put it closer to it's efficiency range.

28.5-30 tank avg usually, 29.1 lifetime (only reset after buying the car), 430-445 range calculated by trip computer. 85% freeway steady cruise at 70-75 mph.

OT, The range calculation is always bogus because you can go below 0 miles left anyways. Realistically I could probably stretch it to 470-470 miles but it doesn't really matter because I have 100 miles of commuting a day so I just have to fill up every 4 days. And yes this means I'm glad I didn't pony up for the 350

There really is very little difference in fuel economy between the 250 and 350 on the highway. I average 35+ MPG while cruising at 60 MPH.

So, you'd be getting much better gas mileage, and since you'd be averaging 9 mph, you'll never miss the absent 250 hp.

I did not mean to say that there would be no diffence in mpg--I meant that under those conditions, you don't miss the extra 100 hp.
