Well it is really up to you to decide how dark you want it. I went with the 35% front and 20% back. I still didn't get a ticket yet for my car. If you do get a ticket just pull it off and redo it once you get your ticket fix.
5% all around that is way too dark and you must be rolling down your windows evertime you try to park your car at night.
I have 5% all around and for the past year and have never got a ticket

I like these guys too: http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/NY/. They are very detailed. Thereafter, you can search your New York Statutes for "tint" to confirm.
I'm thinking 20% might be too dark for me. 35% may or may not be too light. Some places offer a compromise, 28%. Anyone know where to go to see an example of these online? I'd still like to be seen when I'm in the car and I'd like to admire my interior when I'm locking/unlocking (OK, mine will be keyless), I just don't want it to be too light or too dark, but if I have to chose, I'll tilt to the dark side.

NYC = Front windows 70% is the legal limit but usually if you have 35% or higher they won't harass you. Rear windows, never from what I heard have gotten tickets for the back. Depending on the cops, they will either give you one ticket of $60 for both front windows OR two tickets total of $120 for both front windows. I think I memorized all the check points for tinted windows in NYC

^^ haha true, its harder here though, when everyone parks at school 1 or 2 local cops will come, cruise around the parking lot and look at all the cars, then wait when school gets out for them to drive by =/, kinda sux.. and im not willing to leave my windows down in the parking lot
i didnt see the school cop who i was gunna ask if he knew the laws about it, but i'm almost positive he told me 35, and i even brought him a printed out segment of that same DMV article, and he said something (i forget this was like a couple months back) about light measurements etc etc and that its 35% light has to be able to pass thru the front windows, i'm not exactly sure but i'll bring the article and ask him again lol

Again, these discussions always seem to focus on whether you’ll get pulled over, and how hip the car looks with illegal tints. The discussion should be on safety, i.e., whether you’ll be able to see the road, especially at night, without having an accident. IMHO 5% tints on rear and back windows is just “looking” for it.

Yep, I roll down my windows at night to park all the time, I also put my rear views down so I don't scrape my rims. But I'm just ana1 like that. I've gotten 1 ticket so far and this was before I got my PBA card. I am usually nice to the officer so they cut me some slack. Like I said, if I had the choice, I'd go with 35% all round.
