Let me ask you, have you ever actually driven an A4? I know this will be a new model but all previous A4s I've driven had the same driving dynamics. Like somebody else mentioned 60+ % weight on the front end, AWD at best or FWD, and peaky turbo motors make for a terrible drive. IMHO. I'm a driver, and when I went looking for cars I did drive the A4s (and A3s). Audi went out the window REAL quick. BMW and Lexus were all that were really left in the entry-level compact sedan market. The C-class Merc felt old (and I knew it was about to get replaced, but did not like the new model styling) and the BMW is just over-priced for what you get. The excellent mpg of the 250, the driving dynamics, and the best interior & Nav in the segment won it for me.
Go drive an A4, see if it's even still on your mind.

I think audi makes good looking cars but they are the same to me as vw. all style and no substance. or reliability. personally I am looking next at the bmw 335 or even 328 coupe. that thing is hot.

As a previous owner of a 2000 Audi S4, I concur that they can become a maintenance nightmare as they age, both due to the high cost of scheduled maintenance and a multitude of unexpected problems, especially after the warranty expires.
I strongly disagree with BlackGhost's assessment of the Audi interior as "a piece of s"; the interior of my S4 was just as classy and comfortable as the one in my IS350, but was made of significantly more durable materials.
As to tjZ06's comments about the driving dynamics: I've never driven the 4 cylinder A4, but I've had the 3.0 and 3.2 V6 Quattro models as loaners, and found them more fun to drive than the IS250 loaners I've driven. In particular, the Audi has much better steering feel. His recommendation to take an extensive test drive (particularly if you can get both cars on the same twisty roads) is a good one.
I've personally been eying the new S5. But given my previous experience with reliability, I'd find it hard to pull the trigger. If I did, it would be with the expectation that I'll trade the car as soon as the warranty expires.
