Does someone know how these rates are calculated? Geico gave me a quote of $465/ 6mo ($191 for $500 deductible collision) and Farmers gave me $1065 / 6mo ($579(!!) for $500 deductible collision).

Why are the two companies $400 apart on 6/mo of collision?

FWIW I'm 29, attorney, own my home, drive a total of 7 miles round trip from garage to garage, probably drive 5k miles/yr, 2009 IS250, perfect record (not a single ticket or accident since getting my license 13 years ago). I don't understand why my car insurance is so damn high. How the hell are some of you paying between $50-100 per month?

It's like comparing apples and oranges. You can't compare people's insurance rates no more than you can compare insurance companies.

Very true... Along with the integrity of the Agent who is underwriting and selling you the policy. There r many people who will omit or fluff rating information to sell a cheaper policy. Usually the customers aren't aware until renewal time when their rate jumps up because all policies must go through underwriting prior to each renewal. Stick to the golden rule " if its too good to be true it usually is "

Military with USAA and retired folks with ARP get the best rates. For the most part all Standard Insurance like AAA Farmers Statefarm Allstate are fairly competitive with eachother. Its the world of non standard brookers where things start to change. Not here to put anyone down im simply speaking from 12 years of selling this stuff.

Its very rare to come across a $400 gap and both agents are quoting everything exactly the same. There is always an explination and if they cant explain it then its wrong. For those jumping ship for that big gap savings be prepaired for your renewal in 6 or 12 months. Usually the only way you catch a break is when a point has fallen off but your current company is still charging for it because the policy hasnt hit its next renewal.

But - even with all this... There r some very legit savings from time to time. As a consumer the best way to protect yourself from renewal shock or a letter from underwriting stating the policy is being cancelled 30days later for guidelines is education. Know what ur buying and how you are being rated. Ask tons of questions because as an insurance agent its easy to assume everyone knows what they are buying. You should feel good about your insurance. If you dont then the agent you just hired hasnt done their job yet.

I remember the old days when I was 18, I was paying like $2500+ per year on a cheapie car. Now, married, (with or without kids prob dont matter sicne insurance company dont ask). The two cars for my wife and me only cost about $1500 for AAA. I think AGE is the biggest factor for almost all the insurance company.

Best way to lower your bill is shop around and use the same exact coverage amount to compare with other companies.

What he said.... So much plays a part in how much you pay. Not just your age and your driving record, but also what state you live in. I have an excellent record (as does the wife) and I only pay $1,025 per year for full coverage on my '06 IS350 and '03 Accord. combined. Have you shopped around or considered bundling your homeowner's/renter's insurance with your auto policy? It will get you a better rate.

the rates depends of your driving history, tickets, accidents, age, sex, and so on, even the zip you're living in. I moved from one zip to another (5 miles away) and my insurance went up $14. Apparently is more traffic in that zip.
Your insurance is high but so many variables. Try to increase your deductible if you are quite sure of your driving skills.
