May I just add Mazdaspeed3 in the mix, since it does compete with the GTI. It's a nice contender to the GTI. The MS3 has 263 hp, and 280 lbs, simple intake/exhaust mod and a little bit of tuning can easily bring the MS3 to 315 lbs of torque, the only downside is that its FWD, and and it's a bit porky at 3100 lbs for a hatchback.
