Traction control works by monitoring the wheel speeds on each side of the vehicle. If one side is spinning much faster than the other, traction control cuts the throttle and brakes the wheel that is spinning faster. This system doesn't beep.
VSC works with accelerometers and yaw sensors to determine if the vehicle is in a skid, and applies the brakes individually to try to correct it. This system does beep.
Unless the G had the same tires as your car (same size, make, model and remaining tread), it's quite possible that the difference you observed in handling the snow was the tires and not the car.
What kind of traction control does it have? My traction control beeps when its slipping, and sometimes it doesnt...does that mean its switching between VSC and traction control? How does it decide to use which system?

Anyways, I had a Infiniti G35X AWD as a loaner, which was cool, and it seemed to handle snow better than the IS.

Agreed, it's usually the driver's fault. I am equipped with snows on my AWD and I still manage to slide it. Just go easy on the gas and don't slam on brakes in awkward situations. Be safe out there!

It's funny cuz I was at the movies last night and they showed a Lexus commercial with an LS460 and IS250 AWD, driving on a frozen lake...and the narrator at the end talks of how good the AWD features are on these two cars.....Kinda false advertising if you ask me. No matter what kind of AWD system you have, if you're on ice, you're gonna slide!!!

evening if you have awd it doesn't make you invincible in the snow/ice... you still have to be cautious, all the awd does it just gives you that little bit more confidence and ability to drive in snow conditions but as i first stated it doesn't make you invincible in the road.......

the awd 250 is good but if you think the awd will not let you spin out you are wrong. it is a 30-70 split it is not a 50-50 split with would do better in snow but not be as fun in the summer. i think i will get a 350 when i trade in my 250 when a 2 door is out

I can say that I drive up and down the highways in Alaska everyday and have never lost control on black ice or snow at speeds over 55mph and up to 80mph (nothing but white or frosted roads). some parts of the highway are total ice and on corners or if required to hit the brakes you would be done. but the big test for the awd is up a mtn hill around a corner and putting the awd in snow mode which supposedly gives 50/50 traction works great.
of course when my wife drives, all the greatness of the awd system gets thrown out the window because she doesnt go faster than 50mph on the straightaways.
This car is a great awd car and its the drivers that get it all fubared up

believe me there are 100's of accidents the first day of snowfall...some Alaskans seem to think they can drive without snowtires on...so there Lexus awd ends up in the body shop

there's a secondary benefit to AWD...when you're not driving...i'm very glad i got AWD cause there have been a number of times when people could not get their cars out of their parkings spots, including a ES, but my car...no problem...people out there with shovels and their hands moving snow...felt bad for them...

As mentioned, when ice is concerned, it doens't matter how many wheels have power going to them, you're going to slide, the only difference being is that in an AWD you MIGHT be able to pull yourself out of the ditch you end up sliding in. Also, AWD does not "kick in" it's just there, so you need not but look at the person behind the wheel to lay blame on.
