this,

I remember having the guy selling my car turn it on for me to show me it inside and out and he ran in to do something and I thought he said go take it for a test drive, and I went about 10 miles after he called me and wondered where I went.

This whole time I'm staring at the dash and its telling me "Key Not Detected"

Glad I didn't kill the car (Manual tranny)

Yeah i dislike that the car will still run without the key inside it as long as its already on. I understand tho that it also so that the car doesn't just shut off if your battery runs out on your remote.

I like how BMW does it, in my friends 335i if the car is in Park and on, and the key has been moved outside the detectable radius, the car shuts off once you put your foot on the break to move it into another gear. THIS is what Lexus should have done IMO.

Whoa wait, I thought the car turned off as soon as you hit the brake if you don't have the key? I'm gonna have to test this.. I always leave my car running when I have to run inside some where quick because I assumed it would turn off as soon as someone tried hitting the brake.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I pulled into the dealerships garage and went inside to the service area. I hand my key to the guy only to be told to leave it in the car. I look up and my car is gone! (one of the mechanics drove it away to work on it, lol) scary if you ask me!

Nope. You can throw the key out the window and drive hundreds of miles away from it just fine (assuming you have the gas for it)...it'll just say "key not detected" in the display window on the dash.

Otherwise, as mentioned, your car would shut off if your fob battery died. Which would suck.

So just don't leave your car running... =P

Always turn it off if you leave your car..
Even with my Integ., I turn it off, if i have to run back in the house to get something.. just as a precaution... Don't give a potential theft a chance..

I was wondering the exact same thing not too long ago but didn't want to sound foolish with the question lol. I was going to test it in my apt garage with some friends but haven't had time. At least now i won't waste my gas waiting for the car to die (if i was to test it out) especially with gas prices being $3.99 for premium, ridiculous

I don't like the idea that it'll just keep running til the engine is shut off, it should've been done like the other vehicles where it shuts off when the key isn't detected (from the post above).

You can lock the car while it's running with the key outside, however the car will beep the entire time. Neighbors love this.

Just shut it off.

Idling not only wastes gas, it's terrible for your engine.

i say just dont leave your car running if you gonna leave it.
if you tend to forget your key somewhere, the actions above will do the trick.

or you can get a Key ignition mod. your car will turn off before you throw it out the window.

I too wish the car would shut down without the fob, but I assume this is a liability issue. If the car were to shut itself down in traffic and cause an accident there would probably be lawsuits against Lexus.
