Default Buying black pearl emblems vs Painting them

I really like the look of the black pearl emblem kit and was just about to purchase the set when I starting having second thoughts. I was wondering if the almost 300 bucks was worth it. Painting them seems like it would be an easy/inexpensive way to get around it.

I know there are posts on here from people that have done either, but none really comparing the two.

For those of you who have painted them: Did you have any problems, how did it turn out, what kind/color of paint was used, what grade sandpaper, ect...

For those who have the emblems: Was it worth the money, how many have had them tarnish, ect...

My car is SGM by the way.

You can't really 'paint' black chrome, just like you can't paint regular chrome. Those that have painted them do so in a black color. Different look altogether. If you want black chrome you'll have to spring for them and just buy them.

Just buy them... they really change the car and they will last instead of dealing with chips and worn paint

i had a similar problem on my acura a few years back? so they may change and i was told its the rain and all kinds of other things. they require lots of work to keep them clean. if you purchase them thru the dealer i believe they give a 1 year warranty on them so just make sure to take care of any problems in that first year. also maybe talk to some of the techs in service and tell them that you heard of this. usually the techs will be honest and tell you to stay away from them.

it does look great IMO...if you are going to put black rims on the car then i would have them painted instead. depends on the rest of your plans.

Duplicolor has put out a product called "metalcast" that you paint directly on chrome. you have to first spray on an adhesion promoter then the smoke color. In all the cost of both materials in roughly $12.
I tried it, looks good enough to for go spending $250+ on a new set of emblems. It was a real PIA to remove the old double sided tape and apply new tap- used and exacto knife to remove any excess.

I've got a set on mine...

Like others have said: it totally changes the look of the car.

Also, no tarnishing (knock wood). I also have a set of black pearl on another vehicle with no problems either (again, knock wood). So, I don't know if that tarnishing is particular to a certain area (ie- hard water or something) or just a fluke.

In terms of price: it's ultimately up to you to decide whether or not it's worth the money. But, you're in luck, because Sewell just put a 15% off GB code on CL.

I've always either bought them or got them stock already on the car as I'm too lazy to do a diy.
