Has anyone replace the factory non ML fre-air sub with some aftermarket one? Im considering doing this, however Im having a hell of a time finding a good 8" free air sub that might work.

Nope but I just installed a 12 inch in the back. if you do find a good replacement let me know because I have blown the ML one twice it just plain sucks.

I'm not sure what a "free-air" sub is, but crutchfield has many 8" subs for sale.

It only mean that it wasnt designed to be enclosed. It uses the trunk as it box instead of a box enclosure. you might want to check out http://www.partsexpress.com I have purchase some components from them before. very reasonable price.

You're looking for an 8" shallow sub with the magnet mounted on the top of the subwoofer. Unfortunately I have yet to ever see a replacement in any of these cars. I've seen my share of over amped systems and couldn't care for them.

My own vehicle I plan on leaving the ML system alone but I'd like to install either a new sub or another sub in addition to the existing one. This would take away the heat from the OEM ML amp and I can use a seperate bass amp. Since trunk space is important for me I'm looking into removing the rear shelf and taking a look at what I maybe able to accomplish back there. The ML system has 300 watts of power of which 100 watts goes to the sub. I'd like to increase sub output to 200 watts but doing it safely w/o damaging the OEM subwoofer since its only rated to 100 watts. I'm a believer in having the same amount of subwoofer power as the total system's speakers combined (minus the woofer).

I wouldn't mind having an enclosure as long as i can have it positioned under the rear shelf and still have access to the ski hole. Although the entire trunk floor has to be vacant. This pretty much narrows my selection down to the Aurasound NSF8. I uses only 0.35 cubic ft and is ported for low bass. It can handle 100 watts RMS and using 2 will give what I'm looking for. Pair these subs with the Infinity Reference 200 watt amp and I can hide the amp behind the left quarter panel.
