After the check engine light comes on for the gas cap being loose it requires 50 key cycles to reset. However, the computer may already be at 30, 40 etc. key cycles when it first happens so you only have a few left when it resets. This is why different people have different lead times on when it will actually go off. Glad to hear it fixed itself though.
