Question Anatomy of an IS (or a car)

Where can I find a a good resource that shows and describes the basic functioning parts of my car, how they work, how often to maintain, etc.? Is there a standard car "bible" or something like the big orange Home Depot "Home Improvement 1-2-3" book for cars?

I love the DIY posts some of you have shared, but I'll never do my own work however it is helpful for my car education.

Thanks!

I believe they do have a factory repair manual for the Is 250/350. I know for sure they have it for the older models. However they run into the $200 to $300 range. These repair manuals will be will be the most comprehensive book you can get for the car. I would even call it the "bible".

Factory repair manuals may be available, but few people buy them these days. Instead, most of us use what the technicians at your Lexus dealer use, the information available online at http://techinfo.lexus.com, commonly referred to as TIS. It's a subscription website that costs $10 a day, $50 a month, or $350 a year. It has everything that in the service manual, but with many added benefits. It's searchable. It's always up-to-date as part numbers and recommended service procedures change. It has all of the TSIBs, service campaigns and recalls. And it's all in PDFs that are identical to those in the service manual, so you can print the relevant pages to bring out to the car while you work on it. Those on a tight budget will spend $10 for a 24 hour subscription, get on their high speed Internet connection, and download PDFs like there is no tomorrow.

To the original poster's question, the service manual and TIS are targeted at an audience of trained mechanics; so you may want to start by reading some elementary books or consulting the how-it-works website referenced earlier in this thread before delving into the vehicle specific service information on TIS or the service manual.
