Yeah, I think you are exactly right....you are 'tricking' the car in a sense. I'll try this on my car and see what I find.

At WOT, no human on this planet can shift as fast and accurate as the IS auto trans does in the drive mode. The trans shifts so good it completes seamless shift that feel like a CVT, without any power loss. Not only are the shifts flawless, they also keep the engine in the perfect part of the power curve for each gear (at WOT).

The manual mode should not be used for WOT shifting. It can be used but you would want to short shift it so the computer would still shift it at the precise time. If you manually shift it too late you will hit the rev limiter and loose power.

The manual mode should be used to keep the engine in the power curve (RPM range) when going to pass or going through/out of a curve. You can also use the manual mode to shed some speed. The manual mode on the IS does not make the trans a manual, it only allows you to select a lower gear when needed. I found the manual mode to be very effective when I am playing with another car. I can sit in a low gear, with revs up, waiting for my break to kick some a$$. As soon as I get my break, I paddle up to 5th so I can concentrate on driving and let the trans take care of the up shifting (The speed limiter kicks in on 5th gear so 6th gear is not needed, at all, when playing). If there is a need to start from a lower speed again, I simply paddle down again.

After some time experimenting with this trans I’ve come to the conclusion that the IS has a very slick auto trans that was designed for the average Joe.

Yep I do this all the time when I'm cruising in the city (<45mph) and want to force it to 6th gear.

Tends to save some gas too cuz it stays under 2000rpms this way.

Oh btw, to OP : Welcome to CL!
