IS 350 vs. Mustang GT
#46
And, although we're comparing stock to stock, the mustang has A LOT more aftermarket mods available. So, it's much more capable, and the mods are that much money. You can turn a fast car into an even faster car for relatively cheap. Unfortunately, that's where the IS falls off.

Makes me think of the movie line:
"I was on my way back to the hood to buy dem 20's. I mean dem 10's, dey 10's...but I keep em clean"

Ask him to swap vehicles for a minute, then tell him you've won before you even race.... the interior on the current-gen mustangs is -horribly- cheap and unconfortable....granted it costs 10k+ less but you can tell how many corners they cut on the inside of that thing...I'm an old-school muscle and pony car fan from way back (most of my driving life has been with a V8) but after one test drive in the new Mustang I was repulsed by how crappy the experience of being inside one was, no matter that the drive itself was pretty nice.
Performance wise, by the numbers-
Mustang GT Coupe-
3356 lbs curb weight
300 hp @5750 rpms
320 tq @4500 rpms
0-60 in 5.1, 1/4 mile in 13.9@104
Lexus IS350 sedan-
3527 lbs curb weight
306 hp @6400 rpms
277 tq @4800 rpms
0-60 in 5.4, 1/4 mile in 14.0@99.6
(folk on here have certainly run better but it's a decent example of the mag tests)
By the numbers the mustang wins- BUT
The above assumes a manual mustang, perfectly driven. It's pretty rare that happens... and the 5-spd auto in the mustang is kinda crap compared to the 6-spd auto in the Lexus... I'd also put money on VDIM doing a better job than the Ford traction control system in keeping power to the ground. Now, turn VDIM and the Ford T/C off, it's very much a drivers race.

Look in the back of any Road & Track magazine and you will find the 'Road Test Summary'. It's got stats on all of the cars that R&T have tested.
Lexus IS350 - 3615lb / 4.9 (0-60) / 13.5@103
Mustang GT - 3615lb / 5.3 (0-60) / 13.9@103
The mustang was tested with a manual transmission.

I explicitly said in my post the 14.0 1/4 time on the IS was slower than many folks here had run, but it was what several magazine sources reported.
ONE mag source reported 13.5 and 4.9 for 1/4 and 0-60, but that's considerably faster than even Lexus claims for the car.
Different drivers, weather, track conditions, etc will produce different bench times.
I'd also agree that the Mustang has a -lot- more aftermarket mod support available to make additional power, and larger displacement will win out in the mod dept. too if you're comparing NA cars... but that's outside the topic of stock vs. stock.

EDIT: Motor Trend reports 05 Mustang GT 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, 1/4 mile in 13.5 at 103.6. They also report 06 IS350 at 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, 1/4 in 14.0 at 99.8. In another test, they report an is350 at 5.2/ 13.8/ 102.9 respectively
But, none of the numbers really matter, as it's only bench racing. The fact of the matter remains that the Lexus electronics are extremely nice in the car. Ford's on the other hand, are not. For example, there is a known drive by wire lag with the GT's (one reason that many people get programmers for their car), and the downshifts on the automatic are slow.

Alright guys. While i was in pakistan over the last couple of months my friend here in the states bought a Mustang GT. He bought just cuz i got a IS350 and thinks his car is waaaay better then mine.
To get to the point, if i would race him who would win???
I dont know but i have a feeling that i will win straight up no doubt. I dont want to race him if i am going to loose cuz i hate loosing in anything.
Any feedbacks on this would be great for my knowlege
Thanks

You know all major cities of Pakistan have huge underground racing operations after 10 PM? I can tell you the locations and heat these guys are packing if you want to check it out next time. These are some seriously sick bastards though!

People buy Mustang GT's because they're fast.
People buy IS350's because they are fast, luxurious and reliable.
IS350 beats Mustang GT in live race and in various magazines.
What does Mustang owner have left? EXCUSES.
