Well this is new to me, so it says 4, but it is infact anything from 1-4?
This means you can effectively launch from rest in "5" gear lol.
In the Honda it actually downshifts and the number would drop.

Wow, this is a real piece of **** but a nice addition. Does that even make sense?
The shifters look nice but their function isn't very practical or helpful. Well at least to me as this is my daily driver.

I think it makes sense for the smaller display not to show the gear number as the car shifts down, considering that's what the larger display (above smaller display) is for.
Also, the way this shifting stuff has been explained it would make sense to keep only the 'top gear limit' shown in the small display so that you know where you are capping the trany...otherwise you could be approaching your capped gear yet not know it because the display keeps changing, or worse you could possibly (I am not sure) red line the car without knowing that you have limited the trany...
I am sure I will lose some people with my blabbering...

The way i see it is that if ur going up the gears, let the computer handle hit ( keep in D) and use the paddle/s-mode, when ur coming to a halt to help with braking, or for my fav, when attacking a corner drop the car into the right gear before you enter into it , so you can power your way throughout the corner. Maybe its just me but thats about the only use i get out of the gear box is the downshift and gear hold ( Both of which i use on a daily drive basis).
Ever notice when you take a hard turn and then try and accel out quickly that the car has to first downshift a few times? This is what the paddle shifters are for. Downshift into the turn, then hold your upshift while accelerating to put it back into automatic.
that crap is worthless.. its faster to shift with paddles on an IS-f but for the IS250 and 350 leaving it in AUTOMATIC is faster

Most owners of an auto IS don’t fully know how to best use the manual mode. First off at WOT, no human on this planet can shift as fast and accurate as the IS auto trans does in the drive mode. The trans shifts so good it completes seamless shift that feel like a CVT, without any power loss. Not only are the shifts flawless, they also keep the engine in the perfect part of the power curve for each gear (at WOT). No manual trans can do this.
The manual mode should not be used for WOT shifting. It can be used but you would want to short shift it so the computer would still shift it at the precise time. If you manually shift it too late you will hit the rev limiter and loose power.
The manual mode should be used to keep the engine in the power curve (RPM range) when going to pass or going through/out of a curve. You can also use the manual mode to shed some speed. The manual mode on the IS does not make the trans a manual, it only allows you to select a lower gear when needed. I found the manual mode to be very effective when I am playing with another car. You can sit in a low gear, with revs up, waiting for your break. As soon as you get your break, paddle up to 5th so you can concentrate on driving and let the trans take care of the up shifting (The speed limiter kicks in on 5th gear so 6th gear is not needed, at all). If there is a need to start from a lower speed again, simply paddle down again.

another good use... keeping it in low gears for some donut/burnout/drift action
other than that, i wouldnt compare it to manual transmission... it's more of a gear range selector
