Default 92 vs 93 Octane Gas comparo

Good Morning CL members

I am fortunate to have both 92 and 93 Octane gas locally to me. I have just started to fill up with 93 to see if there was any benifit. Here is what the conclusion is:

**IS350**
92 = 340 per tank (empty)
93 = 385 per tank (empty)
-these #'s can be better but I do have a heavy foot

PS...filled up today and Gas is NOW 3.98 for premium in the burbs, wonder what it is for those that live in the city of Chicago!

Would be curious if other members have this option to see what your results are!

Have a Great Monday!
Mike

Remember that April is the month that gasoline refiners switch from winter to summer blend gasoline. Most cars get better mileage on summer blend. Also, temperatures are on the rise, and that also improves fuel economy. I'd suggest switching back-and-forth and collecting a few more data points before coming to a conclusion.

This is going to have a direct impact on our gas prices.

Oil prices spike to record above $117 a barrel
Japanese tanker hit by rocket near Yemen; militant pipeline attacks

updated 2 hours, 20 minutes ago
Oil prices spiked to a record $117.40 a barrel after a Japanese oil tanker was hit by a rocket near Yemen and militants in Nigeria claimed two attacks on pipelines.

The 150,000-ton tanker Takayama was attacked about 270 miles off the east coast Yemen coast in the Gulf of Aden while it was heading for Saudi Arabia, its Japanese operator, Nippon Yusen K.K., said in a statement.

None of the ship’s 23 crew members was injured. Hundreds of gallons of fuel leaked before a 1-inch hole in the tanker’s stern was repaired, the company said.

91 Oct is the highest we can get in Cali....in my neck of the woods (so-mid California) is $3.99/gal. I get about 300/miles per refill with my led-foot.

You will not get better mileage with higher octane.

I paid $3.459/gal for 93 octane on Friday. Noticed Raceway in Matawan was $3.399 for premium yesterday, but I didn't need gas.

That is fair! I will do this I go thru a tank a week if not sooner so this is within the last week so no major weather change and same driving!

So its worth the savings to keep getting the 92?? This is why I wanted to try this out. Its about .15 less per gallon for the 92 and sometimes more! It was 62$ to fill up this am. One thing I am glad I got rid of my V8 Audi S4 for this car!

Higher octane is strictly to prevent knocking for high compression engines that require it, period. Our engines require 91. Putting in anything higher does nothing but contribute to oil company profits.

If you want to put in anything higher than that, you might as well tear up a $5 bill and stuff the pieces down your gas pipe. You’ll get the same performance or mileage boost you now think you’re getting.

The most efficient grade of fuel is the lowest octane that will not cause knock. 91 is the recommended octane and anything over that is a complete waste of money.

What is important is the quality of the fuel. Keeping the fuel system clean will save gas. I only use "Top Tier" fuel.

Cal and few other states dont have anything higher than 91. It is unfortunate because my Z28 runs better than on higher octane FYI my Z28 only has a 9:1 compression. Not very high if you look at other cars.

Have a place here that sells racing unleaded fuel fyi $5/gal. My last fill-up was $4.05 for 91.

I have filled up with 89 any seems to work ok in the winter time. Dropped 1MPG. I didnt do that by choice the gas station didnt have 91 and didnt want to put 87

I paid $3.40 on the AC Expwy this morning (93 was $3.42). I was kicking myself because I filled up on Saturday, forgetting that I was going to the NJ shore this morning. Even at the shore, 87 octane was more than on the Expwy. I think the NJ rest stations can only change prices on specific days of the week.
