This smell issue is also common in the RX 350. Our 07 started to smell real awful and the dealer supposedly cleaned the evaporater. Since then the smell has disappeared. Hopefully this doesn't happen with our new IS350 as we are turning the heat up every so often as an proactive measure.

As well as in the GS. I had this "stinky sock syndrome" looked at by the dealer who advised that the box surrounding the evaporator core was "poorly designed" by Lexus and replaced (under warranty of course) per a TSB. It was a pretty involved job that required the whole dash to be removed. (while they had the dash apart, I had them fix the window/dash ticking noises per another TSB). The dealership had my car for a week to do the repairs. I will have to check back through my records to find the service write up for the TSB # and advise. The sad part is that the smell is coming back even after changing out the cabin filter. Looks like it will be a return trip back to the dealership.

DAMN
I've been using AC for about 2 days, and forget to leave it in outside circulation before I stop my car, and now when I turn on the car it smells like raw sewage haha

I am very impressed with this accurate description with my science background. This is most likely the issue. I had this big-time with my gen 1. I had installed a new cabin filter and still had this to an extent. I then remembered and old detailer trick, Lysol in the front vents with the outside air (non-recirculation) mode on. Even Heppa filters trap odors. It is easy to notice on allergen vacuum cleaners when you first turn them on, you get that wet dog smell. Most important thing, these filters should never become wet or saturated, they are ruined after that.

there was a similar product to this one... that foamed up or something specifically for cars... I can't remember what it was called but I used it on my 02 GS3 about two years ago and it worked.

just google "evaporator odor eliminator" and you'll find products that should resolve the dirty sock issue.
I think the stuff I used was from ackits.com but I'm not 100% certain on that one.

Sometimes the filter
Sometimes. An intermittent odor problem arose after about a year, somewhat after I had just replaced the cabin filter. The smell was like a petroleum distilate, rather than an organic one like garbage or socks. And I am in a dry climate. The Las Vegas dealer's reactions, one per service visit, were:
1. It is a known problem, and there is nothing which can be done.
2. There is no problem. But try running on outside air.
3. We can try changing the cabin filter again, at your expense.
I am sympathetic about diagnosing intermittent problems. But not for failure to believe or take a customer seriously the first time. The third visit did fix the problem. Perhaps the previous replacement was not seated correctly, or had some contaminant on it originally. Or I agree with the previous poster, who said that filters can absorb smells which then persist. Cheers. Pete
