* When I learned to drive (circa 1953) turn signals were still a dealer installed option on most cars, so we were taught to open the driver’s window, stick our left arm out and signal a right or left turn.
When I took drivers ed in the late 70's, they still taught us hand signals. They were even on the DMV written test. Why, I don't know; nobody my age had ever seen a car without turn signals on the road, and had I stuck my hand out the window to signal a turn, other drivers would probably have thought I was trying to flick a booger off my finger.

I took my permit test 7 years ago, and the DMV book still had the Hand Signals.
The odd part of this is that I read where around 20% of drivers today don’t bother to use their turn signals at all. But they do open a window to flick out their cigarette butts.
