Default Gas Mileage Observation

For the first 2-2.5 months I had my IS350, i was averaging about 18-19 MPG. Since about mid-March I have been getting 21-22 mpg. I first thought it was the gas station b/c I was using Sunoco at first and then switched to Shell. I went back to Sunoco on my last fillup, and I still have the improved mpg. My driving roads and style are nearly constant.

My two ideas are:

1) mpg was lower in the winter. I read that gas can burn quicker in cold weather due to the additives in gasoline.

2) car took a few months to break in, and now i get better gas mileage.

anyone notice anything similar or have an answer?

I don't know about VA, but NJ gas is different in the winter. They finally took it out of the gas at the end of April, and my mileage went up 2 mpg instantly.

1. It's warmer.

2. The fuel is "summer" mix, not winter, so it has less oxygen and more HCx.

Winter gas contains ethanol (about 10%). Always try to stay away from it. It will degrade rubber gaskets in the fuel system unless you have a flex-fuel car.

Assuming no change in driving style due to nutty gas pricing, then both theories are valid.

I've seen a bit of an increase in mpg since the 20K mark.
Through year 1 of ownership, mileage was better in the summer.

My 350 drinks gas (18mpg) My 335Coup gets like 16mpg and lets not talk about he 4.8 x5, talk about 10-12mpg.

I don't even look at the window sticker any more for MPG whats the point. You can afford the car you can afford the gas, why worry your self over 1 or 2 miles more. if you look at it its really an extra 30 miles you get out of a tank of gas. Sorry i got bigger things to worry about then get 30 miles out of a tank of gas.!

^^ sux some people still have that mindset, thats why hummer is still in business

i've actually noticed the same thing recently and was going to look some stuff up, but i too had under 20 mpg for the first 20k miles, and now i'm getting 24mpg... i have changed my driving style somewhat with gas prices, but no where near enough to make a jump from 18 mpg to 24-25, but i never knew that there was a summer and winter gasoline, thats probably got something big to do with it =p

Do you know whats wierd?? I was getting 25-26 MPG average per tank here in Phoenix on my 250 RWD, i do the same driving everyday to work and back.. 50% city..50% highway... I had to disconnect the battery the other day installing my XM.. Now its been 2 weeks and im only getting 22 or 23 max mpg on the two tanks i went through, same driving style.. whats going on?? I know its getting a little warmer, so more AC use, but not that much different...

I've had my IS350 for a month and a half now and my MPG has gone from 19 to 23 when I filled up today. I'm in Louisiana, so I don't think that there is a sumer/winter blend for gas.
