Is this a fact that nobody disputes? If so, I need to stock up every time I see synthetic on sale. I am about to change to synthetic once I hit 15K in about 1 more month. I don't think I really cared what kind of oil I use, since I will just change it every 5K and I don't drive very hard. Therefore, I figured I'd just use the synthetic when I see it for 99 cents a quart. Otherwise, I would have just used petroleum.
"Once you go synthetic, you don't want to go back" I have not seen any proof that going back to dino causes any problems. You can mix dino and synthetics (can also buy it that way). What can be a problem is; if you change to synthetic after using dino that developed sludge. The sludge will dissolve when using quality synthetics because of its high quality/amount of anti-sludge additive, in its add-pkg. I don't recommend stock piling oil. All oils are constantly being improved (reformulated) and they last so long now, you may be sitting on that oil a long time.

#1 Do NOT switch to synthetic before at least 10,000 miles on clock. Your car is not truely brake in before 10,000 miles.
Well, 15,000 - 20,000 is ideal to switch.

#2 15,000 and oil change is kinda B.S. IMO. If you are leasing the car, fine.
It's your own car, you want it to last long and go smooth. Why do you care about that 20-50 bucks for an oil change in every 3-5k miles??

I changer my oil and fliter every 3-5k miles, no matter what.
I am using synthetic oil as well.
It doesnt hurt to change your oil and fliter every 3-5k miles and I believe it will do better to the engine than every oil change in 15,000 miles.

this is the highly debated issue with bmw free maintenance, and the quick consensus is that, if you want to keep your car for a long time, you better not follow the OBD recommendation on oil change.

i do it every 7k for oil services on the bmw.
If using a quality filter with quality synthetics, there is no reason why the filter shouldn't last up to one year even with high miles. Years ago the OEM recommended filter changes every other oil change. If the factory fill (dino oil) can still provide safe protection with 10K miles on it, I think one year is safe. I'm coming up on my one year, I'll post the UOA. I'm using an OEM filter with 0w-20 Amsoil.

PS-The OEM recommended OCI, for the IS is 7500 miles!

Just got my own I 250 awd. Actually it is for my wife. I have had predominantly Audis and BMWs over the last 10 yrs. Neither of those mfgs would think of using non synthetic oils in their current vehicles . Although I do think it is not a great idea to use synthetic for engine break in. IMHO, after the break in period, synthetic oil is so far superior to non synthetic, using non synthetic just does not make sense. Also I believe in a 7K-7.5 K change interval for full synthetic. Audi recommends 10K and BMW has a sensor but will change the oil every year if the sensor has not indicated a need for an oil change. Please tell me that Lexus doesn't use non synthetic oil.

10,000 miles?! The engine in your car is broken in LONG before 10,000 miles. Corvettes come from the factory with synthetic, as do BMWs and other vehicles.

Having money is no reason to **** it away (and waste oil) when it doesn't make a difference. But I realize people are stuck on their beliefs so I don't expect to convert anyone.
